They pretty much succeeded in the 1920s and 30s. Very few people in Louisiana are fluent in Cajun French. Only a few phrases survive. There's not enough living cajun speakers to teach a new generation. The new generation which is learning "cajun french" in school is not really learning the same language their great grandfathers spoke. That language is dead. "Cajun French" tought today is just Parisian French with a handful of Cajun colloquialisms thrown in. It would be like teaching kids to speak the Queen's English with the addition of ya'll and calling it "Southern American English".
