Federal government power, blah blah but the Congress is still made up of people that are supposedly representing their states. Why isn't there an effort to curtail this practice of influence?

The 17th Amendment my friend. Biggest mistake we ever made. Founding Fathers did not set up a system where US Senators would or could go against the will of the Governor, statehouse, and a states citizens- like many did for Obamacare. Popular election of US Senators turned that critical Federalist role from State centered to Party centered.

Great point. I'd also add that states want to remain competitive in terms of infrastructure so both travel and transport will go through them. Boosts to the local economies in terms of sales taxes.
