when a woman keeps her last name after she gets married, i get the impression she's more committed to her old family (mommy and daddy) than the new family she just formed.

Or maybe she just has her reasons for wanting to keep it

The professional one has already been given. And that is understandable if she has a career in which name recognition is important. Depending on her field...it may be hard enough as a woman to compete in it, changing her name could make things even more challenging.

Like I said, I gladly took my husband's name. However, I had gone by my maiden name for 34 years. There was a moment or two of kinda sadness when making the change. Maybe some women really cling to their last names as an identity thing and not because they are some crazy femnazi. Taking your husband's last name doesn't make you a better wife.

FWIW, young women are significantly outperforming men. Among people under 30 women earn more than men as a group. And they graduate from college at almost a 50% higher rater (58% versus 42% of high school and college graduates).
