Taking the wife and son for a long weekend. I haven't been in 20 years. Wife and son have never been. We've been looking into some things to put on the must see list, the touristy things... Gonna do the Big Bus Tour pass and subway to get around the island.

Staying at the Hilton Garden Inn at Times Square.

So, OTers, give me some good places to eat and see.

Thanks, guys.

Take the kid to a fire house the guys in NY do a great job of showing the kids merit of their job and it helps teach him about respect for those who risk it all for us

Look up some self guided walking tours. I did like you a few years back and got a 3 day tour bus pass. Came with 3 or so tickets to museums and was my transport around the city for a few days. Wife was working most of the time, so I just ventured out on my own. I hit up the museums, but also just strolled around the park, saw historical landmarks, found interesting places you see in movies, etc. Really didn't pay for much outside of the bus ticket and filled up 2 1/2 days.

Found free sightseeing suggestions online easily. Saw neat things like where the Gaslight Café was, or the Ghostbusters firehouse.

The Staten Island ferry is free and gives you a good view of NYC. Just take that and get right back on to Manhattan. I would go check out the World Trade Center memorial, it's unbelievable to see in person.

If I were you, I'd skip Brooklyn. Stay in Manhattan. There's a ton of stuff to do without leaving the island.

Uber in NYC is not as cheap as it is in other cities, but it's still cheaper than yellow taxis. If you have a family of three, it's worth noting that unless you have an unlimited Metro card, sometimes taxis can be cheaper.

I prefer the MET over the museum of natural history but you should def check out one of the two.
Madame Tussauds is right there in times square.
Go ice skating at rockefeller center

I'm hoping he means the Freedom Tower.

If so, that is a must see.

Also, Circle Line boat tour if it's not too cold.

This. The pass pays for itself if you do enough and will get you in for free to all the suggested places in this thread and then some

John's Pizzeria on Bleecker. After you eat your delicious pizza, step out onto Jones Street and walk toward West 4th, and you'll be right where Bob and Suze are walking.

Transit Museum in Brooklyn is surprisingly good; the boy probably likes trains, so hey.

It's cliché, but you should have pastrami on rye at Katz'. Goddamn that's a great sandwich.

Times Square isn't New York. Everything just outside Times Square is very New York.

Try a cuisine you've never tried before, except Ethiopian. That shite is nasty. Trust me.

This time of year definitely go ice skating in one of the outdoor rinks. Bryant Park is nice- good sized skating rink and the whole park is a pop-up market with lots of little shops. Some neat artisan type shops mixed in with more mainstream though local type shops. Check out the window displays- very cool. And I just saw something about Saks 5th Ave. They have a pretty incredible display with lights and fireworks on theit building. I can't wait to see that on our trip in a couple weeks. Go to Central Park. Maybe take a carriage ride. If your son likes penguins and sea lions the central park zoo has decent exhibits of those. Otherwise it's a pretty unremarkable zoo. No giraffes or hippos like in Madagascar.

As for food- get your son a hot dog from a street cart. Kids love that. Good pizza to be had. Everyone loves John's in the theater district. My favorite I've had there is Angelos (I think that the name) under the Late Show theatre awning. I thought the crust was the best I've ever had.

Go to the Met on Sunday if you are there that day. Free admission (donations encouraged) to a great museum.

Statue of Liberty

I wouldn't recommend doing the Statue of Liberty tour. If it's something you feel that you really need to see, go for it, but it's really not worth it for the amount of time it takes. I would find something else to do.

+1 on Liberty

While you're in lower Manhattan, you should go see the Federal Hall site where Washington was inaugurated in 1789, and right down the street is Trinity Church, where Washington prayed right after. Alexander Hamilton's grave is somewhere around there too. And grab a beer at Fraunces Tavern, where many of the founding fathers had pints.

Theodore Roosevelt's birthplace is a really good tour. It's on 20th near Broadway.

There's a Sonic in Jersey right across the Lincoln Tunnel. Be there Saturday at 3pm.
