Try covering the bottom slide out tray with foil , all you should have to clean are the racks and the drip pan .....

In other words, the warning about not covering the grates or anything else with tin foil isn't a hard and fast rule I should pay attention to? I don't want to blow my patio up...

Never saw that warning.

I only clean my racks and have the very bottom drip tray covered in foil and poke a hole through the foil where the hole is in the tray. Everything else on the inside is a flavor saving ecosystem.

I only put foil on the bottom drip pan and the water pan for easy clean up. Anything else can restrict airflow and smoke flow. Another good tip is to spray the grates with nonstick spray before you smoke. It makes clean up a breeze. As far as cleaning the interior, I let it add extra flavor. I do clean the window. If you take a wet scrubber sponge while the unit it still hot, the window cleans up crystal clean in a very short time. We lost ours in the flood and will be getting a new on at either Academy or Sam's. One note, the Sam's one has Bluetooth. The Academy one has an RF remote.
