Good luck deciding the top 4 out of a 120 team league when there will probably be 20 teams with 10-2 and 9-3 records.

How about picking 6 teams out of a 72 team league with 6 conferences of 12 teams each?

That shouldn't be too hard. Win your division. Win your conference. Make the playoffs. Top 2 teams get a first round bye, like the NFL. 12 team conferences are far easier to schedule than these 14 or 16 team conferences anyways.

Only P5 team left out in this scenario is TCU, who would get in if we leave out the service academies.

Army becomes Houston and switches divisions with Temple
Navy gets switched for Tulane (S. Carolina goes ACC, Auburn goes to the SEC East, and Tulane joins the West)
Air Force becomes TCU and trades divisions with OK St.

My idea would be 4 16 team conferences (64 teams total). Each of the 4 conferences would be divided into 2 8 team divisions. You play 7 in division, 2 from other division and a rotating 3 from other conferences plus one rent-a-win in the first game of the season as a tune up. In 4 years you will have played every team in the other division. In 16 years you will have played every one of the other 63 teams.

2 division champs play conference championship game, winner to the play-offs. No panels, no computers, just decided on the field.
