Well, no wonder you didn't find any nightlife. Pearl is nice but its upscale. I always stay in East Portland between Burnside and Hawthorne and the river and 16th street or so. From there, you can walk most anywhere. Sassy's and Union Jacks are two good, divey strip bars right there. Or you can walk 10 minutes down burnside and across the river to downtown. There are a bunch of bars and strip clubs around there too....I assume you know portland strip bars are not like most places. The girls are "suicide girl types" and the bars are more laid back hang out places than the typical strip bar somewhere else.

Getting around its best to walk or use uber/taxi. You can take the rail to the airport or the slow-arse streetcar to the Pearl district but thats about it.
