I heard that colonizing Venus (living in the upper atmosphere) would be easier

I guess that is what I mean. It's a vicious, barren wasteland of frigid, dead, oxygenless nothingness. If we could transform an uninhabitable planet into a habitable one, I would think it would be far easier to make our current planet more habitable.

He's a clear special interest group. He stands to make money off such a venture.
He is intelligent about his specific field, but not really worth listening to regarding other many other areas.

PSA: There's a new series about a fictional first mission to Mars on National Geographic Channel tomorrow night. You can stream it now on their website.

That's why they are experimenting with CHEM trails...see if they can terraform mars and manufacture an atmosphere that's breathable

Not with our current technology. Mars is much easier now.

so we'd have to colonize it with trees before we can live there.
First off...how are you going to make an atmosphere like ours for the trees to grow in.
Second, trees suck at O2 conversion over their lifetime.
Why not the real powerhouses of O2, the photoautotrophic protists!

Yes, but we need some insurance as a species, and Mars is it.
Do you have any idea how many times we've come close to WWIII over a flock of geese? Sorry, but we need aa other planet to assure our survival as a species.

So how would you create gravity on Mars without trees? You can't do it, I know a lot of people hate the idea of treeing a planet but it seems unavoidable.

Humans will never live on Mars

I actually wanted to get a cerebral debate going.
But for real, you can pack way more protists and grow them much easier than trees.
That being said, trees grow towards the light, not matter their starting orientation. So, you don't have to worry about lack of gravity.

That is my main point in the OP. There is a difference between creating a survival outpost per se and colonizing the planet - aspiring to have a civilization live there. It just seems to be an exercise in futility over what I perceive is hyper climate change paranoia (or more likely special interest greed).

So the plan is to colonize a planet that has no water, toxic air to humans, and takes years to travel there? All in the event that Earth becomes inhabitable? I get that we are curious and explorers by nature, but this is dumb as shite.
Although a trip to Mars may be worth it to bag chicks with 3 tits.

We already have a colony on Mars. This is just away to get more taxes.

Mark my words: One of the first people to put their feet on the Martian surface will be a planetary geologist.
I am SOOOOOO in my element!
