they're not asking her to do a derivative. unless she's in an intro calculus class, she shouldn't be doing any at all. and if they were, they definitely wouldn't start with quotients. looks like they're just being introduced to basic functions.
paige, notice they're asking you to take r(x) and find r(3), so literally just replace the x for 3, or whatever number is in the parentheses.
