My wife works at a large corp and we were paying $180/month this year for our medical and prescription coverage for a really good plan. Went to get us signed up for 2017 and it's now $440/month

WTF could possibly make that ok? I read some articles that said HMSA could go up 35% or 43% in some cases and the state insurance commish said as long as it isn't excessive it's ok. But to go up nearly 250%?

Because you get your benefits through work, you are dealing with both the decision to raise premium, and the company's reaction to this.

Case in point: My work. I cover just myself at work, wife covers her and kids at her work.

Premium for single coverage was $385/month last year. Company paid $350, I pay $35. Company pays $350 per cemployee per month regardless of what option you choose.

This year, premium went up $85 to $470/month (22% increase). However, the firm decided to not increase their contribution. So the entire $85 increase went to me. My share now is $120 a month.

So my premium cost went up just under 250%, even though the actual premium only went uo 22%.

Maybe something similar is happening. And in no way an I excusing a 22% premium increase, that's nuts.

That may be it. I have her going to talk to HR today to see wtf. 22% would be awesome at this point... and that's what's known as price conditioning. Take this huge increase year and even if it "only" goes up 20% for 2018 I'll feel it's a lot better than 250%. Pure insanity.

Or his wife's employer isn't covering as much, if any, of his premium anymore.
