Why exactly? He makes way more than a coach with 5, about to be 6 titles. He is definitely worth 5 million or so, but not 9 right now
I think that makes a better argument for why Nick Saban is underpaid than why any other coach is overpaid.
Nick could make $12 million a year and still produce a net profit for his program.

I agree but that's still outrageous for someone to make that much and not won anything. And definitely for someone who seems to get tired of one place and burn himself out quickly.

Not really. Michigan has been shite for over a decade and was desperate. If they missed on him they would have been a has-been. Now they are #2 in the country and they are as relevant as they have been in my lifetime.

Seems like a bargain price to me considering positive impact he has had on Michigan football and local economy.

michigan's being innovative now
i wonder how prevalent that kind of arrangement is in this space.
The ever brilliant T. Boone Pickens fricked the Oklahoma State Foundation and the OSU endowment in a deal like this taking out life insurance policies on the top 15 net worth alumni/donors through an insurance company he's invested in. OSU's paying millions a year on these policy premiums, only problem is just 1 of the old fricks have died yet.

tbh.. I'm kind of interested to see if Michigan ends up with 2-3 losses. They haven't really played anyone but Wisconsin yet and they only scored 14 against the badgers.

Even at two losses they are far ahead as a program compared to what they have been. They will sign a top 10 class and be hyped to hell before next season. That is what a successful program needs, sometimes you have to spend the crazy money to make a crazy spectacle to get people to pay attention.

I refuse to believe Kelly makes that little. Has to be other incentives or money hidden that isn't reported. Notre Dame is private so they don't have to report shite

Yeah but are they really the second best team in the country? I think it's more to do with the brand.

Fisher's buyout would be a little more than $33 million according to the report, making him an expensive proposition if another school would be interested in him as a coaching candidate.
That's the first ive heard of this. I don't believe it one bit.

This guy does not know what a 'buyout' is.
Fisher's buyout will be $5M in 2016, $3M between 2017-18 and $1M before 2019.

very strange
Not strange at all. The insurance industry has been pushing plans like this, usually through variable life insurance policies (policies with floating death benefits dependent upon the results of investments within the policy) as a means of providing tax-free/reduced income tax benefits to highly compensated individuals.
Basically the only income tax implications Harbaugh would have from the $2,000,000 premium would be the actual cost of the insurance benefit and he would have almost no restrictions on the use of the balance of the $2,000,000 premium.
Example:
$20,000,000 death benefit of insurance policy
actual annual cost of insurance $150,000
annual premium paid $2,000,000
taxable income to Harbaugh = $150,000
use of $1,850,000 tax free (can be withdrawn or loan to self).
This is a huge income tax savings over taking the $2,000,000 straight out as compensation.
ETA: There are many coaching contracts that have a life insurance component, including the Les Miles contract with LSU/TAF.

By this logic, if Jon Gruden coached in college he should make at least $10mm per year right? Since he won the Super Bowl?
I said he's a great coach - but he has literally won nothing of significance at the D1-A level.
