I said in this thread Lars was right for Metallica. The argument is dumb - Danny Carey is light years ahead in ability. No reasonable person disputes that.

Perhaps. I really dislike Tool, so that is no doubt coloring my answer. But the video you posted wasn't anything special.

Ability? What is that? Literal pure technical ability? Or the ability to be perfect in a song and make the drums more than just a timepiece? I do not agree that it is obvious that Carey is better than Ulrich in that regard. I find that Carey likes to throw in a lot of prog rock tropes into his playing (e.g. little flourishes on the hi hat between the beat) that are technically competent but come off more like masturbation than actually adding to the song.
