Why isn't Coach O on that list?

Because LSU is his dream job and it's a better job than ND.

Kiffin and Miles have about as good a shot as I do.

Stoops would be a legitimate candidate, and we were supposedly fairly close to signing him in 2009. We didn't budge on a few non-salary issues with Stoops (which we ironically enough subsequently granted to Kelly). I'd be quite happy with Stoops.

Herman - maybe but probably not. The people I know around the athletic administration think it's a foregone conclusion that he's the property of UT or LSU, so we're not in the driver's seat.

Meyer - I wish. I still occasionally hear rumors from people I trust that he still has that itch, but I don't put a lot of credence in them, and he has a juggernaut going right now at a school where it's easier to win. It's a pipedream.

I'd imagine Stoops would be the very first call. I'd bet we would put feelers out to Petersen, too, just to see if there's any interest there at all. We'd probably feel out a few NFL coaches like Bill O'Brien and John Harbaugh to see if they have any interest and aren't completely happy in their current situation, though the likelihood of them leaving is vanishingly small.

It starts thinning quickly after that. Paul Chryst at Wisconsin would get a call for sure. I actually think Schiano might get a look, too - he had Rutgers well above their historical norm and has OSU's defense playing lights out right now.
