How do you get noticed by them? Is it worth contacting them if you're interested in something their company is offering/they are aware of an opportunity you may be unaware of?

From a Linkedin standpoint point they filter by keywords on your profile or skills. Also if you've ever published any articles that helps. Otherwise I'd email everyone I wanted to work with and try to schedule a call to discuss your qualifications. Most are willing to do so as they need a pipeline of people to reach out to at all times.
