Just educate yourself, put the numbers down over how long you're planning to keep it, and go from there.

Just for a frame of reference, scheduled maintenance on my Volkswagen diesel is about $250-300 every 10k miles. If it were an automatic there would be a ~$700 additional service at 80k miles and there's a ~$900 timing belt change at 120k. When the exhaust filter clogs up (likely around 160k with my driving) it will be around $2000 to replace. If the high pressure fuel pump shits, that'll be well into the thousands to replace. Should never happen with proper maintenance but shite can happen just like every other vehicle.

I'm not trying to shy you or anyone away from diesels. The engines currently on the market are incredible across the board. Just be sure to do your homework and balance the cost.

Downshift is dead on......

I have the Ram Ecodiesel and I love it.
I had sticker shock at the first oil changes, but the price has gone down.
I now pay $139 every 10,000 miles. That averages out pretty well.
I get 20-23 mpg in the city.
I get 28-31 mpg open road.
Best was 38 mpg in Wyoming.

I have the 4x4 and it has held up on some nasty roads and fields with no breaks.
I'm 26,000 miles in, and I dont even look twice when I pass a Chevy. No offense.

I truly believe that my truck isnt even close to being 'broken in'.

That fiat engine is one of the most proven engines in Europe.

Im very happy so far.

Good luck.

I am trading in my VW and it looks like December 15th will be the buyback date. I've been shopping for cars to replace it, but am really underwhelmed by the car options. I stopped and looked at the Canyon Duramax yesterday. People claim 25 mpg average. I think my mostly highway commute can get closer to 27-28 mpg. But the 42k price tag is hard to swallow. If they can get it closer to 35k with rebates and stuff, I may be sold. Not that it's the most attractive purchase in the world, but I need all the mileage I can get and just have no desire to be in a Dodge. Plus the towing on the Colorado is like 7k lbs, so it's decent for a mid size.
