Check out the yellow poly on the roll at Lowes. It is I think 3/4" and has a very high load limit compared to its low cost. I believe it was around 75 cents per foot with a 1000lb load limit. I bought several rolls to secure my floating dock when a storm broke it loose. Used leftovers for swings for the kids. If you feel its too small in diameter, knot it every few feet for better grip.

you could tie it off with a bowline knot if you want it to come back off easily, or just wrap it around the tree a few times and tie it off with a taught line hitch or a couple half hitches if you want to take slack out.

Looks like you can get 3/4" polypro rope at Home Depot for less than $0.05/foot. That would be my choice.

Harbor Freight sells 1/4" welded zinc plated chain for $30 for a 35ft roll. With a 20% off coupon that's about $0.69/ft. You might spend a little more but after you pull it out and are done with it I would have a lot more use for a bunch of used chain than I would a bunch of used rope. Plus you don't have to worry about rope burn with a chain.

DON'T USE THAT! Sun breaks it down fast and you will be replacing it with in a year.
