It would just be suicide to do so because there is no advantage. If you recover an onside kick, it is not sudden death as the other team never had possession. Therefore, you risk giving up a short field, and thus greatly lose a lot of odds of winning.

As saints fan found in the rule book. If you recover an onside kick to open counts as the teams posession. Receiving a kick is chance at posession.
If the kicking team recovers they can win with a fg
