How early should I start planning my Tokyo Olympics trip?

Maybe we should start a thread for a guide? Or does anyone have a good updating guide I can follow?
How early should I plan, how should I prepare?

1964 will be back here before you know it.
I'd plan ahead as far as possible to make sure I had my reservations, but in saying that I'll probably never go to another Olympics.

Why is that? This will be my first one so I don't know anything about it. I've just always wanted to do Japan and figured it'd be a good crossover.
Should I just go at a different time?

Probably. I love Japan, but it will probably be crazy during the Olympics with crowds, heightened security, etc. If you really want to see Japan, you should go when it is not the Olympics. If for no other reason to not limit yourself to Tokyo. Kyoto is really a must if you are going to go all the way over there.

Thanks
Know a good place to start as far as how I should prepare?

Start keeping a look at flight price trends. This way you will know what the cheapest/average option is. And with that knowledge, book your flight as soon as you think it is at a reasonable price. No doubt flights will be much more expensive during olympics. But if you know what a good price is, when airlines open their booking ~330 days out, you will be able to jump on any good "deals."
Apart from that, not much else you can do so far out.

Japan is great
The Olympics are "meh"(imo)
In this case: Great + meh = expensive and painful meh
I have a family member who is fluent in Japanese and is my minder/tour guide/translator when I go to Japan. It's wonderful with a guide.
I'm a fairly intrepid traveller but I'd have reservations of going away from the Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto areas without a minder. The language barrier is tough there. And they drive on the "wrong" side of the road to boot.
All this being said, I'd probably opt for some kind of tour rather than self-touring if I didn't know someone with Japanese language skills.
Good luck, it is wonderful.

This is a great idea. Do the guides do unconventional things I'd like to try too? How does it work? Do we share a bed?
really excited for this trip though. Thanks!

Ah, so Sunakku (commonly known as "Snacks") is your goal.

I want to go to the Olympics in a foreign country, but I don't think I'd ever want to go somewhere like Tokyo I'll only go once. As said, the prices in Tokyo are going to be through the roof, you won't be able to go to a lot of places , etc.
I personally plan on going to the Olympics somewhere I would not go otherwise. Use it as a reason to visit somewhere unique and see the Olympics at the same time.

A great place to start is my review I posted on here from a trip I took last April. Check it out and then ask questions!
