he mentioned that he did not see Saban as a "big name".

I guess the name of the coach who turned down the Head Coaching job for the New York Giants before he even came to LSU was not big enough for Skip. Skip is not the man to hire coaches. Thank GOD, Emmert told Skip to do whatever it takes to hire Saban. Left to his own devices, Skip gave us Smoke Laval and Les Miles.

The LSU brass flew to meet with Glen Mason of Minnesota. He told them no, but recommended they speak to this up and comer coach - Nick Saban. Desperate to come home with a coach they told Jimmy Sexton the check book is blank. They (Sexton and Saban) wanted to be the highest paid coach in the NCAA, and they got it.

Nick left Lansing, on the LSU jet, without telling his players goodbye.

The rest is history.

TigerDom, Skip did not hire Saban. Saban's 1st year was 2000 and Skip's last year coaching was 2001. Joe Dean was the AD at the time.
