My uncle was a DO. Spent many years in the Army, then private practice as an OB/GYN. He is retired now, but caught a lot of shite early in his career for not being a "real doctor." He always told me it was his residency that counted, but I still teased him about being lower than a dentist.
I think times are changing with the thinking towards this. Just look at all the medical students going to the Carribbean for school now. A few of my friends went that route. I was skeptical, but they both did residencies in the US and are in private practice now.
