Then you need to get out more and look around.
Crawl space homes are very common where I am. In fact, slab homes are typically the cookie cutter cheap houses from what I've seen. I prefer crawl space to slab actually. Best of all, all the utilities are under the house and are easier to maintain.
Another edit: Not to mention, the storage space of a home with a crawl space. It is awesome.

im with you. all these new stucco/fake stone houses look the same and have no character. even if i were to build new i wouldnt build a slab house.
