Seems like every week there is multiple posts criticizing the ability of one or more of our kickers. Criticism usually derives from a lack of understanding, so let me share some information.

Think about this...most colleges identify certain important skill positions and those positions have specific coaches dedicated to training players in that position on how to improve their skill set. At LSU we have a Running Backs coach, a Wide Receivers coach, a Tight Ends coach, DB coach, usually a QB coach ( although Cam pulls double duty on this, and so forth.

There is no kicking coach. Kickers just fall under special teams and usually the Special Teams Coach has no experience in the mechanical aspects of kicking. Kickers are on their on. Unless the entire special teams unit is practicing, kickers are expected to just go find time to kick. They will get charted 2 or 3 times during camp. That is the limit of interest coaches have in them. They just expect them to get better on their own.

Take Cameron Gamble for an example. Cameron was recruited because all throughout HS he did one thing....he blasted balls out of the back of the end-zone. He did this on pure leg strength, because as much I like Cameron, he still has some mechanical flaws in his swing. Nevertheless, he comes to LSU and is told to "drop the ball between the sideline and the left hash, no more than 3 yards deep" and yet, never provided any serious training on how to do this. This is NOT an easy thing to do. If it were, NFL kickers would do it every week. With Millions of dollars on the line, every Sunday, NFL kickers boom through the end-zone.

Kickers spend their own money and dedicate extra time to obtain skilled coaching from specialized private camps, such as Kohl's, Sailer or Guy.

Colby is LSU's all-time accuracy leader with 84% and has the 3rd best single season in LSU history with 92.9%. Pevito has nothing to do with that. Colby was the #26 ranked HS player in nation. He was hitting 55-60 yds as a senior. Pevito had nothing to with that.

The same can be said for our next kicker, Connor Culp. Connor has worked his way through the camp circuit and developed a skill set that got him recruited....but what is LSU going to do to help the kid improve his skill-set? Nada.

My point is.....schools take every other position and work hard to develop the skill set the kid showed up with....except kickers. Kickers are on their on. By and large, these guys do a great job. They take their roles serious. LSU is not the only school guilty of expecting kickers to somehow just magically be better than they were in HS...few coaches really understand the position, the mechanics and the physics involved.

Just food for thought....

Speaking of kickers, Growden looked pretty good last game.

Nobody gives a shite about the kicker. Always will be that way, bc they have one fricking job. Its not overly complex but absolutely does take skill and dedication. While everyone is running sprints and grinding it in the trenches the kickers are playing some sweet accuracy game in the distance. No one gives a shite about some kicker sob story. Put in the time and make the kick when your number is called. Also, possibly kicking through the endzone may be a lot to ask for every kick, but kicking within the confines of the width of a football field is not.

Trent is happy and enjoying Texas. Great guy. They tried to get Trent to drop the ball into the corner but he absolutely could not do it. He hits such a low ball, all he could do is blast into the end-zone....and nothing wrong with that at all. That is what should be done. I don't think Trent was never called upon to try anything really long while here. He has a very flat trajectory. He hit a 43 ydr against UTEP a couple weeks ago, but missed one from 50+ last week against Cal.

That's kind of the point. LSU isn't asking their kickers to just keep it within the ~50 yard confines of the width of the field. They're asking them to basically put it within a 5 yard X 15 yard window (between the hashes and the sideline, and the 5 and the goal line) One wrong bounce and it's out of bounds. Gamble's kicks generally aren't sailing OOB in the air. He's getting it to land where the coaches want it to. The problem is the returners are letting it hit and sometimes bounce out of bounds. It's really out of the kicker's hands (or foot rather) where the ball goes once it hits the ground

This is unforgivable. You are being paid a big salary to coach special teams and this is a huge part of it. I don't care if you never learned anything about it before, if you are named special teams coach at a school, you owe it to your players, your head coach and the school that employs you to learn about it. A special teams coach who does not know how to coach a kicker in the mechanics of kicking should be fired.

Then don't do it. It continues to happen and puts our defense in a tough position. You can't gamble with the high quality teams ahead of us and gift them great field position. Kick the ball through the endzone or make the tackle on the return; that simple.

And oddly enough, NFL kickers still boom it out of the back of the endzone and they are STILL employed the following week.

Ok fukstick. Check end of year stats, on how many teams is the kicker the leading scorer?

Since you didn't read I'll try to explain it to you. Direct your frustration to the coaches not the kids. They aren't getting adequate instruction and the strategy being employed is obviously not playing to their strengths

Not sure what the intent of your OP is, but it was obvious the CD's extra point kicks and field goal attempt had extremely low trajectories this season.

It's up to the coaches to make sure CD corrects this immediately, or it may cost us a victory.

If i can see this, surely CD and the coaches can.

Didn't really read either sorry. All I know is we have had now what, two missed XP's and two KO's going out of bounds? inexcusable, period!
