Anyone Flooded Have Experience with the LA Shelter at Home Program?

We just had our "inspection" which is done with a Program rep AND a contractor.
Even though I signed up for this program the day it came out, they finally made it out to here to "make my home liveable again". But I didn't wait. Much of the work is done thanks to great friends and family. We tape and float the sheetrock this weekend. Electrical done. Plumbing done. AC done. Windows next week. Cabinets ordered. Flooring ordered. We have a mini-fridge set up. We have a working toilet. It's taken a lot of help and a lot of work, and we've used up much of our emergency savings since FEMA didn't come close to covering these things (appeal pending).
Yet, somehow, these two guys were able to find $8,000 worth of "work" to "clean and sanitize". Really? It was like these guys were working together, not to get me back in my home faster (which they won't), but to get the contractor as much money as possible apparently out of thin air. They seemed disappointed that we had done so much work ourselves. Also, the money never sees the homeowner's pocket. It goes directly from the government to the contractor. And I'm not allowed to be reimbursed for items/work they would have done had I waited.
Soooo... thanks tax payers, I suppose for cleaning my house for $8k?

It's actually federal money, so thank everyone in America...especially those hard working folks who are currently protesting in Charlotte!

I saw some shite on FB about their $15,000 repair work. It was basically just a square of sheetrock that went around each electrical outlet. This Shelter at Home thing has got to be one of the biggest scams going around right now.
Here's the video on WAFB

I would not let them in my home because I would have to undo their crappy work to get it right. Any contractor participating in this program should be put in handcuffs. The videos on Facebook is embarrassing.

I heard on the radio that of the thousands of applications only 4 homes were actually completed through this program.

I'm not in the house yet. We're in a camper in the driveway. I've got a stove, sink, microwave, fridge. But they were still trying to push these on me telling me I should "take everything I could get." They were baffled when I told them I didn't need those things. For the fridge, they ignored me and said they'd put it down on the list "just in case" and I could tell the contractor in a few days whether or not I really wanted it. The contractor kept asking the rep things like, "you sure we don't need this?" And he'd get the response, "well, he says he doesn't want it" with an eye roll. I mean, WTF?

Everything the government does wastes money. Instead of all this BS paying up to $15k why not hand half of that to every person who is down to studs in their house?

My parents are getting the sheetrock done and the entire inside of their house repainted from floor to ceiling for about $7500.
These guys are charging $15,000 for a small piece of sheetrock around the outlets and a temporary sink made from scrap wood.

You sure that was Shelter at Home? I thought I remembered hearing the same kind of numbers regarding those FEMA portable housing unit things. Thousands of people signed up but only like 4 housing units had been delivered... and 1 of them was to LP president Layton Ricks' daughter.

So I just watched that video. What a fricking joke. We literally did that ourselves while we were working around the house. It's 2x4s holding up a sink and minifridge. The thing is we took that shite down because we are about to tape/float all the drywall. I don't want these things getting in the damn way. Pics of what we did:

Damn, son... that's about $8,000 worth of repairs.

I keep joking about how I'm going to put all sorts of new shite on my resume: carpenter, general contractor, etc.

They tried giving money directly to home owners after Katrina with the Road Home program. The result was home owners spending the money on anything but renovations (new cars, gambling, etc).
The contractors in the Shelter at Home program have been given strict instructions on the type of work they can do by FEMA. They can't do a full restoration even if it's within the $15,000 cap. Once the FEMA inspector says the home is habitable by very basic standards, then no more work will be done.
From the Shelter at Home website: "Very basic initial work will include items such as mucking out the house, basic electrical restoration, installing a basic water heater, removing wet wall insulation, and providing up to $500 in basic cooking or refrigerating appliances."

This program will not renovate your home. It will only make it habitable.

That's good info... but I think you're missing the point.
These contractors are trying to charge as much as possible up to the $15K limit and only providing some half-assed repairs. The kind of work I've seen could be done for about $200. It's just a big money grab for the contractor.

they come out with a crew and fix 1 outlet in each room
they fix one bathroom just so you can have privacy so just sheet rock and remount your toilet,
they give you a 2 pot mini counter top burner and wish you the best, it is for people that have no where to go and need to get back in their house asap. its not a full rebuild by any means

Nobody in here said it was. We are talking about the insane amount of money being paid to these contractors for doing 1 hour worth of work with scrap materials.
The OP even explained how they were trying to get him to do things just so they could charge more for the job.
That's what this is about.

You could be right, I'm not positive tbh.
