Trucks scream excess — excess of gas, parking spots and the amount of space you think you should take up in public compared to everyone else. They are the epitome of unnecessary auto machinery.
I can get on board with a 19 year old driving a F250 super duty being a little excessive

How do you know what this 19 year old does during his time away from school?

Two of my better friends in high school drove a Ram 2500 and a 3500 with duals. Both had Cummins engines.
They both had cattle, they both cut rice. Their dads each bought them one truck that did everything they needed (they hauled often and then also towed boats, and they could fit a 4 wheeler in the bed when needed) instead of a work truck and daily driver.
So maybe my opinion is a little skewed, but I tend to see a 1500 model and think, "oh, they wanted a vehicle with a bed." But when I see a heavy-duty pickup on campus, I tend to think, "that guy either has a camper, boat, or does some form of agricultural work."
