We have a female dog with the same problem. She does everything to let us know but still has accidents. We let her out often to try to minimize the problem. We also limit her to the kitchen while we're away and put towels on the floor. She pees on the towels if she can't hold it and the tile floors are easy to clean up and disinfect.
It isn't optimal but she's a fantastic dog and I can't put her down for this issue. She was also diagnosed with cancer 6 months ago so our goal is to let her have all of the good days she can.
