People really are expecting too much out of Google. Do they have a lot of resources? Yes. Is their goal to satisfy consumer needs? No. Their goal is find new ways to monetize you. You are their product. Look at GBoard. There is a reason it exists on iPhone and not Android. It was built to create a new vector to profile iPhone users. It may come to Android eventually, but the product didn't get where it is today because the goal was to make a good keyboard. The goal was to get user data, the ends to do that was with a good keyboard.

Allo appearing to be half assed is no doubt linked to the same mentality. The goal wasn't to make the end all be all of messaging clients, the goal probably was to try to break into the space of these 3rd party messaging apps that hide user data behind encrypted messages. If it looks like it's a Me Too app that's because it was created to be a Me Too app.

Contradictory. Yes, the goal is get user data, so wouldn't making apps that people will want to use be a means of doing that? Google's track record of not sticking with one messaging solution effort doesn't really scream "They just want your data."
