Washing machine making grinding noise when agitating

Anyone have any idea what's causing it?

Make sure the noise isn't actually coming from your couch first

Tell wife to stop rubbing against it.

need to know what brand. front load or top load, or best yet get a model number.
A ton of things can cause this. from cheap, to throw it out.
You say agitating so I am going to assume a top load with an agitator.
If it's a VMW whirlpool you have a bad bearing. If it's an older direct drive it could be a coupler or the transmission.
If it's a GE it's the motor or the transmission.
If it's a Frigidaire it's a bad trunnion, or bearing or the transmission.
If it's the transmission you are looking at $500 to pay someone to do it, $300 to diy.

No, man.
Everbody knows it's the frickin' fracking mist causing it.

I coached a friend of mine who had a very similar problem to replace the magnetic sensor. She flipped the washer over, replaced it and no more grinding. I'll try and find the link for you.
Here is the part which I had her replace.

The Hall sensor? Usually that will lock the machine out with error codes.
Noises are caused by mechanical failure not electrical. Mostly there are a few exceptions, but even then it's electronics making mechanics do something wrong.
Also that's an LG part for LG machines, OP hasn't told us what machine he has and only machines that have rotor/stator drives utilize hall sensors.
To tell someone to change a part before knowing the problem for sure can be bad and costly.

Yea that's the name, I had forgotten.
You're the expert, but this worked for my application with the same exact symptoms. As far as the mechanical failures, you are correct; however, the hall sensor magnet itself is for positioning which could include speed/rotation etc.
I think I argued with you before about this

The only way I can see that happening is if something hit the sensor and caused it to contact the rotor. I do see weird stuff all the time.
I just changed that part on an LG front loader a week ago. But the machine would fail to spin and give a code. Generally every sensor failure trips a code.
It's a simple sensor which just counts the rotation of the rotor.

Better than making an agitating noise when grinding.

Bring her to see a doctor

Yea I think this is what happened with my friends. Stuff knocks the washer, too heavy on one side during the wash etc kind of thing. The fault codes she was getting, in conjunction with the sensor, were the valve hose and one other one I can't remember. Was strange, but apparently those models throw tons of codes which only some are applicable.
Some parts for LG are swappable with the Frigidaire which was news to me. 5-6 months in and she still has a working unit.

I took the agitator out and ran a cycle with no noises coming out. I'm guessing the dogs need changing?

Some parts are universal.
Ge oven igniters fit any oven. All dryers use the same gas coils. Fingers for fridges are almost universal.
A lot of items can cross reference too. Lg tends to have the cheapest replacement parts.

Are they cheaply made though? I've been very fortunate in that the only thing I've ever had to change on my washer was one of the drain hoses.....thankfully only a bit of water discharged, but I was freaking out thinking it had seeped into the walls

Swapped one of those as well and works like a charm.
Do you fix this stuff for a living? You are pretty knowledgeable.

What do yall think I should do since noise is non existent with agitator out? Change the dogs?

My personal take is there is a problem with the way the tub is positioned. That link I gave you, you could call them and speak with their technicians - they were very helpful to me and the part was cheap AF. Washers are so cheap these days that it would cost you about the same to fix it with a washer repair guy than just to buy a new one.

Also, what is the make and model?
