My guess is that the first one - where the CDM is a 4 - plays more like a 3-4-1-2 when in possession, with the fullbacks pushed up high and the CDM dropping back to nearly CB depth. There are a lot of teams that do that right now.

Otherwise, I can't imagine why the 4 would be in the midfield.
