What are the cons to doing this?

I'm surprised more Churches don't offer this.

Biggest downside is having to deal with providers yourself. In other words, if you have a planned surgery, you let the hospital know in advance you belong to a sharing ministry and agree on a price.

The ministry will take calls from the provider and will be the ones sending the check, and whatever discount you can negotiate counts toward your deductible.

So the main downside is doing more of the work yourself as opposed to BCBS/United/whoever having a locked in price for the procedure. With the shrinking and in some cases nonexistent networks that's less of a disadvantage.

Obamacare banned any new sharing ministries from being created. Can't have people making their own choices.

I'm in the same boat as far as trying to figure out what to do with insurance. Have a 6 month old and myself. Recently took a severance from my old job to start my own business. COBRA is insane, but I haven't figured out what to do insurance wise and it's starting to worry me with the little one.

Common mistake that young people make. You could be in a car wreck that would put you in the hospital for a month with a year of physical therapy following that.
right, which is why I will get insurance. But I don't see where the mistake is in not going to the doctor if it's not necessary.

I did the same thing not to long ago. I pay right at $200 a month for shite coverage. Deductible is like $7000 and I couldn't tell you what the copay is without looking at the file. I never go to the doctor and it's totally catastrophic coverage. Necessary evil I guess. The only saving grace is that it's Blue Cross and their network is solid.
