No one has said that our country, its founding, or its current state is perfect. However, there are those that want to dwell in the past or on past behaviors of individuals in an effort to justify their current poor behavior. To expand upon your example, the black community is still attempting to blame slavery and Jim Crow era treatment of blacks for the current state of the black community.
Is it dwelling on the past or dwelling on the perpetuation of historical conditions? Which one is it?
The flag represents everything that has happened under it. The good and the bad. Whether that is the valor of our soldiers or original sin of slavery.

I would say that it is more dwelling on the belief that historical conditions are being perpetuated even if they are not. I liken it to the story from the other day of the woman who claims that when a man audibly farts in her presence, the man is raping her. It is total BS!
