Cool link but that's based on a solar system which also requires battery storage which is where the real costs comes in for heavy loads with inverters. A small system for the basics like lights can be done fairly cheap.

Actually it is crazier than that, at the start of the video it shows that it uses both solar and grid power to run the house (along with battery storage). You can charge the battery from the grid, solar or the car (acting as a generator).

They are also working on a system that uses electricity to pump water into a pressure vessel for potential energy storage, then releasing the water to turn a pelton turbine/generator for power production during peak hours.

So, you don't need an inverter at all...just a ton of space for water storage, high pressure pumps and large pressure vessels. Well...that isn't very cheap, either.
