Contacting the principal is a good idea. This way if your son drops one of those guys next week the principal is aware of what happened previously.
The school may not believe your story next week if you tell them after the next incident where your kid comes out on top.

Definitely find out who they are.
Parents of these types are often the worse to deal with though.. there's often a connected reason as to why these kids are the way they are..
