Martha Quinn, Alan Hunter, Dweezil Zappa, Nina Blackwood... Videos were cool with Benatar, Mellencamp, ZZ Top, Motley Crue, and on and on. WTF happened? Now its a cesspool of Gangsta, Hip Hop, political bull shite that gets mentioned once a year because they still have the MTV video awards.
I want my MTV back.

In hindsight, I thought MTV had 2, maybe 3 great years, before the record labels began manipulating the format & douching up the entire musical era. Of course, back then I didn't realize it so much...I loved those first 2-3 years so much, I stuck around longer, like a junkie in search of his next quality fix
IMO Martha Quinn actually looks hotter now than she did back in the day...the others, ummm, not so much.

Lol@ 21p is the token white artist represented at vma... Oh and that shitty Adelle video for good measure you knew wasn't going to win a thing.
Kayne approved awards show.
Eta I watched plenty of videos last year but the same boring ones popped up for every fricking category.
What a joke. In their desire to be diverse they are..... Not remotely diverse.
Eta2 it's sad when not one but TWO songs that have exact same refrain won.
Work. Work. Work. Work. Work.
Vs

What a joke

Corporate America happened

Corporate America happened
From 1985
From 1985
quote:
Fun Fun Fun in the fluffy chair
Flame up the herb
Woof down the beer
Hi
I'm your video DJ
I always talk like I'm wigged out on quaaludes
I wear a satin baseball jacket everywhere I go
My job is to help destroy
What's left of your imagination
By feeding you endless doses
Of sugar-coated mindless garbage
So don't create
Be sedate
Be a vegetable at home
And thwack on that dial
If we have our way even you will believe
This is the future of rock and roll
How far will you go
How low will you stoop
To tranquilize our minds with your sugar-coated swill
You've turned rock and roll rebellion
Into Pat Boone sedation
Making sure nothing's left to the imagination
M.T.V. Get off the
M.T.V. Get off the
M.T.V. Get off the air
Get off the air
See the latest rejects from the muppet show
Wag their tits and their dicks
As they lip-synch on screen
There's something I don't like
About a band who always smiles
Another tax write-off
For some schmuck who doesn't care
M.T.V. Get off the air
And so it was
Our beloved corporate gods
Claimed they created rock video
Allowing it to sink as low in one year
As commercial TV has in 25
"It's the new frontier, " they say
It's wide open, anything can happen
But you've got a lot of nerve
To call yourself a pioneer
When you're too god-damn conservative
To take real chances.
Tin-eared
Graph-paper brained accountants
Instead of music fans
Call all the shots at giant record companies now
The lowest common denominator rules
Forget honesty
Forget creativity
The dumbest buy the mostest
That's the name of the game
But sales are slumping
And no one will say why
Could it be they put out one too many lousy records?!?
M.T.V.-Get off the air!

Me too! It was addictive. Artists like Billy Idol, The Cars, ZZ Top and Aha got such a huge bounce from the videos. It was all fresh and new.

I liked Martha but really thought Nina Blackwood was sexy as hell.

Does Kanye or the Kardashians now own a stake in MTV?
I ask because Kanye and Kim were front and center, Kim introduced performing artists, and during and after every performance the camera shot to Kanye and Kim.
I frickING HATE KANYE AND THE KARDASHIANS!!!
frick MTV

I remember VMA's with Oasis, REM, STP, RHCP, Garbage, etc.
I like hip hop but man it's just taken over way too much.

MTV did a snarky live blog of the 1984 VMA's to highlight how lame we all were back in the day. And what happened is it actually highlighted the diversity of music and opinion on the channel in its early days, which is sort of what made it great. It played everything. A quick list of the artists that won awards, performed, or appeared on stage/video as part of the proceedings:
Rod Stewart
Cyndi Lauper
Michael Jackson
David Bowie
Diana Ross
Eurythmics
Joey Ramone
The Cars
The Go Go's
Ray Parker, Jr
The Rolling Stones (sort of, Ron Wood and Mick Jagger, separately)
Van Halen
Madonna
RATT
Billy Idol
Herbie Hancock
Hall and Oates
Peter Wolf (of the J Giles Band)
Huey Lewis and the News
Dale Bozzio (Missing Persons)
ZZ Top
Tina Turner
Quincy Jones
Sheila E (cuz Prince wouldn't deign to show up)
Duran Duran
Iggy Pop
Can you imagine a modern equivalent to this lineup on the VMA's? I mean, we're covering the whole pop spectrum as it existed in 1984 plus several legacy heavy hitters. That is a spectacularly great, and varied, lineup.
Oops. Here's the link.
