Why use humans at all? If machines are so smart why not a nuclear source? Humans will always try to escape or wage war

This is a legit question that's not explained.

But I think it's a way of saying frick you to the humans.

Humans created them, no doubt exploited them, and then went to war with them.

Humans give out sufficient energy to power the machines, so why not control and frick them forever.

Humans are a renewable energy source, and during the initial human/robot war the fleshy folks created a barrier to prevent solar energy from being used. That left the robots with inefficient resources like nuclear/fossil fuels, so they chose to adapt power needs to whatever useful resource was on hand.

Oh, and the robots practice guided evolution on the humans. Pretty much allow them to become insurgents knowing that the machines will ultimately win. Until Smith screwed things up, that is.

If you've seen the prequel to the series "The Animatrix", you might be on to something

That is explained.

The machines cannot use the Sun.

The machines cannot use the heat in the core, because that is where the humans actively fight back. So, the best option is to keep farming.
