Do NOT rely on Carfax/Autocheck etc. Get the VIN, call your insurance agent and have them check to see if there's ever been a claim on the vehicle. If possible take it to an independent shop to have them do a pre-purchase inspection.
I wrecked a truck doing $15,000 worth of damage and it never showed up on carfax, and was repaired at a Ford dealership.
