Call and write your federal congressman and senator and ask them for help. They will at least submit a "congressional inquiry" and if it's possible to get an exception or consideration for mitigating circumstances sometimes they come through.

This isn't bad advice at all.
Also, work that estate lawyer angle.
Dealing with estates is no fun as it is. Been there. This definitely would weigh heavy on me but sounds like you're as calm as can be.
