Mrs. Vox and I ware talking about the unimaginative, rolling shitstorm that is Hollywood these days, and it took about 7 seconds for the subject of remakes to come up. Across the board, they're a bad idea and wholly inadvisable, to be sure.
Without going to Google as a crutch, I'm going to list all the remakes I can think of, and feel free to chime in with any I've missed. I get it that some of the ones out there took many generations to be remade, but I'm more thinking of the ones from films over the last 40 years. Recent enough to piss you off that it's being remade, if you follow. If there's one that hasn't been a wretched waste of celluloid, I'm curious to hear which one(s).
Ghostbusters
Footloose
Total Recall
Poltergeist
Arthur
The Bad News Bears
Nighmare on Elm Street
The Karate Kid
Carrie
Clash of the Titans
Day of the Dead
The Invasion (of the Body Snatchers)
Fame
Flubber
The Nutty Professor
Haloween
Submitted:
The Jungle Book
The Departed
The Thing
What else ya got? I can't think of a single one of those where the redux was better than the original.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a great remake. Technically, the original The Thing is a remake, but really, just in name only. Of course, both of those are over 30 years old. Little Shop of horrors is exactly 30 years old, I think. Also a great remake.
Recently, the Evil Dead remake was pretty great. The Ring is one of the best horror movies of recent years, and its a remake of a Japanese film, Ringu, that people claimed to like after The Ring became popular The Grudge, OTOH, was pretty famous before the American remake... and Pulse is probably the best J-horror film with an unnecessary US remake).
True Grit is terrific remake, probably better than the original, and a proper adaptation of the book. Oldboy is also unnecessary, but not awful.

It could be argued that the Dawn of the Dead remake was on par/better than the original.
But yes the Day of the Dead remake was crap.

Movies like Carrie or The Thing are not really remakes, but are adaptations of literary works.
