By pressing the button you may kill yourself if you haven't had a physical recently...

The real conundrum is, what is after you pressed it you found out you killed two guys who would've cured both anyway but it would take a hundred years to immunize the population.
Or what if you also killed the guy who invents the time machine and goes back and kills Hitler

HIV really isn't terminal anymore....with good insurance something else will kill you first.
But it would be amazing to eradicate cancer. It's an ethical dilemma but cancer has pushed us to the point of desperation. I might have to consider it for the greater good of many.

Or, what if it was God's plan for you to press the button and by doing so you caused the Rapture and were "left behind"?

food for thought,
Would this button still apply if it was the person you were closest to even if they had more than a week live??? Or would you rather eliminate the suffering even though you would spend more time with them...:

No.
Some other pathology would become an epidemic and you're back to square one.

You sound like an empathetic guy.
If we were to ever cure cancer, some other disease would take its place. Cancer is a way of nature telling us to GTFO.

No. I'm not a fricking monster. Many, many good people have those conditions that wouldn't have otherwise with your proposed genocide.
Plus I'm pretty sure in our lifetime these will be solved. Hell, aside from Africa, AIDS has been mostly solved. HIV is no longer a death sentence. No need for a mass genocide to get results we'll almost certainly have one day.

I hope this man has no pets.
I think that he's just an idiot troll, but I agree with you.
I can't imagine his disregard for life if he actually believes any of these "thoughts."

I love questions like this because as easy as it may seem one way or the other, both sides contain many pros and cons.

People giving you a hard time are surely shortsighted.
You are potentially saving BILLIONS of people in the future with the expense of killing many millions now.
It's a legit question. Although for the sake of overpopulation, I don't think I do it. I think cancer and AIDS do their part in nature. It's fricked up, but nature is fricked up.

From what I know about the tragectory of medical care, the horrors of genocide, and the fact that death is actually necessary for our world to function, it is actually a very easy choice. I really think in our lifetime we will beat cancer and HIV, but that does come with the side effect of people living much longer and if we have enough resources to support everyone.

Well, you're not thinking it through. What if the cure for cancer is 40 years away? What if the HIV vaccine is 10 years away? What would be the ramifications of tens (if not hundreds) of millions dropping dead simultaneously. What would that do for our culture as a whole? What if in saving these people resources become more scarce sparking a dystopia in the long run? It's not a legit question for anyone who can think the ramifications through.

Not now, but maybe in a few months

Asking a hypothetical question makes me a troll? How about you just not post if you aren't going to contribute to the conversation.
Like someone else already said, each decision has pros and cons and there have been answers on both sides

Yeah that makes sense.
I should have probably made the parameters of the question more strict. It truly does all depend on the situations you mentioned.
