While it's absolutely true that Brawn fell off in the second half of 2009, and Red Bull rose to have the dominant car, Button didn't hang on. True, Barrichello won two races when Button didn't win a single GP in the second half, but those two races aside, there was only one GP in 2009 where both Brawn drivers finished with Barrichello ahead of Button (and that was in the first half of the season).
Between Barrichello, Webber, and Hamilton taking points off Vettel, the WDC was really never in doubt for Button after that incredible first half.
But yeah there is a stark difference in Brawn's form before/after the modification to that season's technical regs.

I quit watching after Schumacher retired. Always loved Ferrari though.

My question is, how was the competition?
Every generation has 3-5 great talents. Michael Schumacher was the best of his 'generation,' but he also benefitted from being the last one still driving after 2001.
Schumacher's greatest seasons came during a 'lull' in F1's history: in '01, '02, '03 and '04, Schumacher was the only 'great' talent with the experience to really dominate. His numbers reflect that.
Schumi won a lot of races on talent, a lot of races on speed, but he also won a lot of races with experience, intelligence and tenacity - that's especially true once Mika Hakkinen lost his edge in 2001.
