Sure, all of that. And Dan White basically got away with murder. The "Twinkie Defense", seriously?
(Sidenote: My brother-in-law knew White. He says he was a good guy. Up until he murdered Moscone and Milk, I guess...)

But if a class of ships wasn't being named after civil rights activists, he doesn't make the cut. Still a good guy, but no ship name.

Dan White was in the 101st Airborne in Vietnam. If he saw some heavy combat action, he very likely had some PTSD issues that were unresolved and bothering him. There was almost no treatment for PTSD back then, it was not recognized. Back then, society and the dominant culture told us that all Nam vets were unstable killers -- nobody wondered why and the VA had no real program to address the problem. None of this excuses what he did, he should have served life in prison.

But, it is sobering to realize how much many of our vets are suffering in silence.
