I don't get this. Why is it a crime to place a noose around a statue? They didn't actually damage the statue.

Damn the other guy got screwed 6 months in prison, which is three with good behavior, but I would take 5 years probation over 3 months in parish prison. So one year is a cake walk, even if supervised. As long as it's not drug court probation should be a breeze.

Well, I honestly wouldnt complain if being a douche was a crime. And at worst we can probably all agree that this kid was being a douche.

So Im ok with it

Should have put it on a white statue. No charge.

I don't agree with that underlying statute, but c'mon the implication of force is pretty fricking obvious.

So, because someone places a noose around a statue, that implies the threat of force? To whom? All black people because he placed a noose around a statue?

You don't get the implication that placing a noose (something associated with lynchings) around the neck of a statue of the school's first black student might not make black students feel slightly threatened?

Again I don't agree it should be criminal, but the fact that this would be an implication of force to black students is pretty obvious.

I don't think students' perception of force should be the deciding factor in whether or not he's charged with a crime. What about the Battle Hymn of the Republic?

So let's assume this statute should exist. What should be standard for deciding what is threatening?

An actual threat

If he put on note on the statue saying he was planning to lynch a black person, ok.
