Draft Strategy

What are y'all draft strategies in standard leagues? BPA regardless of position in the first 5 rds, load up on rbs, rb or wr first, etc.
just posting this for discussion I like to see how people look at it differently, I like to draft a top wr and top rb in the first and second and then go RB heavy the next few picks unless there is a Wr I cant pass on.

No QB until the 5th round at the earliest.
If I pick in the first 4 spots I look hard at RB. Otherwise I go WR. The first 5 picks should be 3 WRs and 2 RBs unless I see too much value in the QB position to pass up. RB is a crapshoot but if you have 3 stud WRs you will be in great shape.
Jay Ajayi should be a good running back this year. David Johnson is a stud but something tells me he doesnt produce the TDs he had last year.
Melvin Gordon should be another RB that could be had later and produce great. That Offensive line was in shambles last year. If they stay healthy the Chargers will win the division.
Waiting later on QB has always served me well. I love seeing Brady, Rodgers, Brees, and Luck go early, especially if all are taken in rd 1. It means Im getting great talent that those 4 players cant touch.
I would glady take Rivers/Romo this year. I think Big Ben will go too early based on last year.
Even Tannehill is a decent start this year. Keep an eye on D.Parker for a 2nd or 3rd WR. He could be a top 10 this year.

The best strategy is no strategy

This. Every time.
Adapt to the draft, take what the draft gives you.

BPA based on your own evaluations. Assign draftable round grades to each player.(never pass on value)
Create player tiers(Elite, Good, Average, etc.) at every position so you can understand the depth at each position
Know(predict) which position wells will dry up first and prioritize your selections.
Never draft a TE early. Every year some jackarse drafts Gronk in round 2 or early 3rd...that team in my league has never made the playoffs.
Evolve with the board.

+1 all I research is the upcoming rookies, each team's offensive line, which division they're in, a couple mocks to see how crazy people are/be prepared to draft someone else, and... That's it. No draft board or anything. Oh, and I usually take QB after the 11th or so. Kickers 2nd to last or last round. Defense vice verse with kickers.

If you dont have a strategy it means you arent prepared. I have a list of players I wont draft based on certain things like the defense, the oline or the player themselves.

Doing research isn't a draft strategy. A draft strategy is saying I'm going to go RB/WR/RB no matter what.

12 team PPR last year I took Gronk at 9 and won. The league isn't won at the draft it's won at the waiver wire.

drafted Reed in round 10...your point
WW is gold for season success but he was asking about the draft. WW fishing is definitely needed to excel.

I actually disagree with the majority here. I think you need to have a plan going in, especially when you know your draft slot a bit in advance. I've seen way too many guys not be prepared for a scenario that unfolds and shite down their leg because of it.
This doesn't mean you can't be flexible if a player unexpectedly drops or guys you liked went earlier than anticipated, of course.
I think the two biggest things I would stress are
1. Have your own rankings, and stick to them. I feel strongly that better and more rational decisions are made outside the high stress environment that is a fantasy football draft
2. Know your league. Some guys love reaching for QBs, some will always go RB first, etc. Any information advantage you have helps you make better decisions and win more often.

I'm definitely in favor of having a draft strategy going in and sticking to it. I had one last year but completely bailed on it. My league very heavily drafted RB's early last year. I took 4 WR's out of the gate; Brown, DT88, Jeffrey, Green. I ended up making the semi's due to some good waiver wire moves, but I should have never went 4 WR out the gate. Lol. My plan was to take WR-WR-RB, but when the other 2 WR's fell I decided to abandon that strategy and go BPA. Didn't end up working out in the long run, but live and learn. This year I'll be sticking to my strategy once I figure it out...Hopefully.

Why didn't you just trade one of your Wr's for a RB?

This is my strategy as well, don't draft someone just because due to rankings they are the best player available. Last year I drafted DeMarco Murray even though I didn't want him because he fell to me in the second round last year. Listen to your gut, if you really believe a guy is going to breakout this year don't be afraid to stretch and get him rather than going by rankings.

I did eventually. Our league isn't very trade happy come to find out though. It's an act of congress trying to get one to pass with majority vote every year, lol. Ended up trading Green for Charcandrick West when he had just taken over that starting role.

majority vote to veto a trade is dumb as frick, IMO

Draft Strategy
Depending on your league format, I tend to form a strategy around the perceived weaknesses of the league that year. For example, this season, there are enough QBs that I would feel comfortable rolling with that I will probably not pick one early. The only QB i wont get is Romo because he'll break sleeping one night.
So if the WR's are looking good I normally try to get a stud WR and then stud RB in the first 2 rounds. If the league looks like several teams by RBC, then I'll probably roll with a few RB's early and play the WW in the season. I've had a couple of years where I only got a pair of WR's or RB's and then the WW was scarce all year. So, I try to look at the number of playable players by position. My 02.
ETA: I also try to project which players will be available by round going off of well known cheat sheets. I can normally get it pretty close for the first 4 rounds, and that reduces draft day guessing.

You still need research to do that. The player you would take at No. 1 or No. 10 is probably not the player I would take.
My strategy with PPR was usually WR/WR/RB-WR? It always depends if the player I want is there or not. I put notes on every draftable player in the top 200. Some I dont want and some I rank alot higher than a cheat sheet. I dont give a shite if the consensus says David Johnson is the No.1 back. If I think Eddie Lacy will be the number 1 back, thats who I pick knowing I cant get him in rd 2.
Most players get a cheat sheet that is outdated because all those stats are based off last year. I look at the team first and then the player. The number 1 back last year probably wont make the top 5 this year.
Research is alot better than nothing but you have to have a ton of luck on yourside.

no strategy, get yourself a list of all the players and familiarize yourself with them and their situations. From there decide who you want or not based on the projections that are being put out, most don't deviate much from them. who do you like more than the projections? Who do you like less? From there you can determine what you need to do in a draft. I don't think Ive ever gone into a draft saying I'm gonna take a WR first, then a RB or whatever.>that's a losing strategy imo. The best strategy is deciding what players are undervalued and go get them.
