Though I guess it's possible the dad took them minor league games I'm assuming they were going to Chicago, Saint Louis, or Cincinnati for the baseball games.
Chicago especially I could see it being possible that he ditched his dad for a bit to check out an import record shop.

It isn't impossible that he happened to hear about an obscure band somewhere. He could have met someone at a concert or any number of places. Maybe he had a close friend who was a huge music nerd. Maybe the record shop in town has an owner who has a personal relationship with Jonathan and shares access of music that would otherwise be unavailable to most teenagers. Just because it wouldn't have been typical doesn't mean that it was impossible.
Trying to stuff each character into neat little boxes that have to fit how you think they should be is absurd. Life and people are too varied for that. This isn't some anachronism mistake like talking about the Smiths before they actually were a band.
