I know this may be an unpopular opinion, but I feel Nicholson is overacting so much in this film that it feels like someone else doing an exaggerated impression of him.

His dialogue and mannerisms are just too corny to realistically accept this guy runs shite.

I don't think Nicholson's overacting hurt The Departed at all, but I definitely agree that he was hammy AF.

To wit, have you guys ever seen this gif?

I've seen The Departed like five times and I just assumed it was from there. It's actually from his comedy with Adam Sandler - Anger Management. Which is obviously a goofy movie, but that's how outrageous Nicholson is in The Departed. I just assumed it was him.

The Departed is great.

But it's not Goodfellas.

In fact, it feels like a facsimile.

Jack over-acted and that is very noticable but it doesn't hurt the movie...

Because everyone overacts...it's this giant over-acting testosterone film that took a good Japanese story and made it crazy-bigger than life American.

Look, I really like the movie. But Scorsese just lost his compass in this film. It's like a caricature of Scorsese if the director was a teenager.

But it's somewhat comical. With the language and characters and ending.

I'ts American anime...in film.
