Total of about a week, 2-3 days each place. I'd have to book a trip like this too far in advance to know what the weather would be like, so it sounds like driving wouldn't be a good idea. Any skiing around that area that I could access? Not married to Tahoe by any means.

They clear the roads pretty quick after a storm. Its not the snow and ice but the volume of traffic, especially on a Friday going up and a Sunday coming back.

2-3 days in each place is definitely manageable. The road could be a problem, but at worst you will just have to buy some tire chains, and that's usually only if there's a storm happening while you're driving. I had to do that driving to Tahoe in March. Really not a big deal.

Edit: and if you're going to ski anywhere , do it in Lake Tahoe, there are around 10 resorts to choose from. California snow has been hit or miss lately, so the conditions might not be good. If they are really bad you can just enjoy the beautiful sierras.
