Seems impossible to overdraft these days with online banking. You can check your balance on your smartphone.

I thought so too. I had went and paid rent with a check on Thursday, was getting paid Thursday at midnight. So I was all good. Nope, Land Lord went and cashed the check that afternoon, funds come out immediately, bank pays the check, I get charged $35.
Never have I had a check go through the same day, I even post dated it, but apparently they do now. So I got screwed.
