All because incestuous royalty were having spats between each other.
The royals were driving this to a much lesser degree than their military leaders, industrialists, and even more nationalistic working class political parties.

Several great grandparents went over as doctors, but one of my great grandfathers lied about his age in order to go over. He was 15 when he signed up and ended up getting gassed. He fought in the second battle of the Somme (I think the offensive) and a couple of others. My dad still has his medals at home. After the war my grandmother said he drank and smoked heavily and wouldn't talk about what he saw over there. The guy had to have gone through an unimaginable hell.

I have no idea why people are downvoting you. Dan Carlin's podcasts are top notch.
Absolutely I recently finished all parts of the series on WWI....fascinating. Sadly, we don't learn much about WWI in school. It was very revealing and eye-opening listening to the podcast and learning just how absolutely horrific the war was.

Whenever I see a world war 1 post I think of this
We are nine in a hole, nothing will get us out of here. But we have eaten, we must relieve ourselves. The first one to feel the urges climbs out, he has been there for two days now ten feet away, killed with his trousers down.
We crap on paper and throw it up and out and when we have no more paper we do it in our haversacks.
The battle of Verdun continues. We go in our hands, dysentery flows between our fingers. We crap blood, we go where we lie. We are devoured by the flames of thirst. We drink our own urine. If we remain in this battlefield it's because they won't let us get away.

My great-great uncle died in France at the age of 24. He was a private in the 38th Inf Reg, 3rd Inf Div... Rock of the Marne. When I got a copy of his death file from the National Archives I really wasn't expecting to laugh.

"Keep quiet" would have been "shut the frick up" if that was me.
Although it is possible he said "shut the frick up" and the report was cleaned up. At the bottom it is addressed to his mother... so the Sgt that wrote it might have watered it down a bit.

I just finished Ghosts of the Ostront. By far my favorite Hardcore History series yet.
The Eastern Front in WWII makes WWI look like a cake walk.
