I believe they'll be participating in TOPGUN activities in Nevada in the very near future. It will be interesting to see how they do there.

I was told they got smoked by the F16s as well.

It depends on what the rules and assumptions being made were. If they were assuming something extreme in favor of the F35, like its missiles will always hit their targets, from some sort of extreme range, for instance. I'd be real interested to see if it was a fair fight.

So an air to air combat fighter was better than a bomber?

I wonder how they would do against the upgraded F15Cs?

My buddy works on F-15's at the Belle Chasse NASJRB and said the F-15s kicked the F-22's arse in dogfights.

It's an honest question. I want them where they need to be. Not dogfighting at Topgun vs. an F15.

I have a feeling the deck was stacked in the F35's favor.

We'll never know. That's why I don't put any stock into this reports. Waste of time.

From what I understand, the F22 isn't really a dogfighter. It's a long distance destroyer. Designed to engage the enemy before they are aware of its presence. However, even in a dogfight, I would have to side with the newer, more advanced aircraft.

ETA: It's hard to imagine that they designed a newer, more expensive aircraft that would lose a dogfight to the aircraft it's replacing.

There's so much more technology in a 35 that it's not really surprising. I just kind of wish Congress would stop trying to dick over members of the military in order to pay for the god damn thing.

According to the link the F-35s suffered no losses, but it doesn't necessarily mean they won dogfights. Apparently some of them could have achieved their mission without being detected by the F-15s, which would obviously be a plus for the F-35.

So, a strike variant of a platform designed half a century ago can't take the "latest and greatest" overprice, boondoggle, "jack of all trades, master of none" aircraft?

Sweet.
