The beer garden is pretty cool, the lack of Bud/Miller/Coors and higher prices have done a good job of keeping the trash out. Downtown really needed a good spot to day drink, with the success the beer garden has had I'd bet similar places will be popping up within the next few years.
One thing I always enjoyed about JSP in college was the myth/rumor going around in the small towns around Lafayette that they had a collared shirt dress code for men and dresses for girls. I've never heard of that myth, but it was one of the better places downtown when I lived in Lafayette ~5 years or so ago.
