Thoughts on Brek Shea's comments

What an awful attitude for a professional athlete to have. This really upsets me and would really piss me off if I was an MLS season ticket holder. Playing in the MLS is your job and you should want to give more especially cause of how much you are paid. I made a thread about 10 months ago about the DP ruining the USMNT and this kind of solidifies it. I know not ALL of them think this way but I'd bet he's not the only one. What is the incentive to work hard when you are getting paid way over your value to play in an easy (for them) league. Thoughts?

He doesn't have the chest
Definitely is not the type A personality you see in successful pro athletes.

Sounds like he was saying MLS is more team oriented and he doesn't like being under a microscope.

Brek Shea makes way too much, but that's an Orlando being stupid problem, this isn't like Clint Dempsey or Michael Bradley that are overpaid but are overpaid because they sell tickets etc. Here

I wouldn't say this a reflection on most USA players. Shea doesn't want to be great from those comments. He just wants to get paid and not have to deal with the stress of playing abroad. It's his life he can do what he wants but he'll never reach anywhere near his full potential with that attitude.

The MLS needs a lot of things but when you have owners pay 100 million franchise fee. They make what ever rules they have to that protects their investment. Even if it's detrimental to the growth of soccer in the states.

Maybe if they expand enough they can get to a point where it can happen.
I think it would set the sport up in a better position. It helps MLS get hard fought games, and gives it a unique feel since no other us sport would relegate shite teams

MLS I and MLS II would be awesome
More clubs means more professional acdmies developing talent.
Hopefully get rid of the super draft one day. Let the kids out of college that want to play in the MLS pick the club they want to play for based on offers from interested clubs like they would if they decided to play in Europe. Create a competition for these kids which would help with wages and other aspects of real free agency.

What would be awesome is a first division NOLA FC playing Houston, Atlanta, and Dallas, or a second division NOLA FC playing at Shreveport, Jackson, Mobile, etc.
As MLS gets through all the major cities, they have to have more cost effective forms for second-tier markets

I do not understand how people expect a league that has only existed since 1996 and essentially was rebooted in 2005 to function like one of the top European leagues. It will take time and there will be certain aspects that will need tending and nurturing before refinement and polishing can be applied. I think the MLS is an incredible success story that is still just moving out of childhood into adolescence in a sense.

I thought they were doing well in not over expanding but now they are going a bit wild

People get frustrated because the way the league is set up. They see it as holding the league back. For all the good moves the league makes it then makes dumb ones or keeps bad policies in place.
Those policies worked when the league first started but as soccer grew and now the explosions of soccer in the US. Those policies are being seen as bad by lots of fans who are exposed to other leagues.

It's just going to make a shallow talent pool even worse.

I don't think they've gone too crazy yet. Some off these places have needed teams for a while. However, they have to get a better TV deal.

28-30 teams is way to big for a first division. Especially for a league that lacks depth.
Posted on 6/25/16 at 3:45 pm to SlowEasyConfident
Not to this degree. However I do think it is a reflection of the lack of effort to get better while playing in the MLS.

I wouldn't mind if MLS tweaked some rules to make teams play more young players.
